A few people asked if I could make them some door pull straps like the ones I fitted to my car when I decided to delete the arm rest and reupholster my door panels for a simple, vintage RS style look.
The door pull is affixed using the factory arm rest screw. The arm rest actually uses two different length screws, 25mm for the two lower holes and 40mm for the upper hole. Since this door pull is affixed to the upper hole it uses the longer screw. Here is the large 1.375" x 0.85" two-piece turned aluminum knob set in machine finish with red door pull straps reinforced with brass grommet and washer with teeth. The large outer knob is held in place with a 2.5mm hex stainless steel set screw. The nice thing about this design is that it is strong and completely covers the ugly door screw and gives the interior a substantial bit of bling like a large case 55mm Panerai diving watch.
The red pull strap is easier for passengers who might be unfamiliar with how to pull the door shut and is easier to see at night. If red isn't your thing they are also available in black.
^^^ that design was my first prototype. I thought the proportions were a little too large for my tastes so I thought I'd try a different design that was a little smaller.
1.25" x 0.50" turned aluminum knob in machine finish with red door pull straps reinforced with brass grommet and washer with teeth.
I considered several design options and for this first set of the new, smaller, one-piece design I drilled a blind hole 15/64" in diameter and secured the M6 screw with a powdered steel based two-part epoxy. The factory screw is an oddball size and I cannot find a tap anywhere. So I drill and tap the hole to 1/4-20 and thread the screw in until there is interference and also epoxy the screw for a belts and suspenders approach.
For those who want the lightest, most simple, pure, and inexpensive option I supplied plain red (or black) door pull straps reinforced with brass grommet and washer with teeth by themselves. The look isn't as fancy and you can see the exposed hardware but some people might prefer this.
All my parts are made to order by me in what spare time I can scrounge in between working on my Miata, the race bike, my band, chasing women, and my real job. This latest design turned out so nice I wanted to keep them for myself but I'll make another set later. I thought y'all would be interested to see what is possible if you have an idea and follow through with it. A lot of the coolest Roadster stuff in Japan is made by enthusiasts in their little workshops and I can definitely say that I have been inspired by the pureness of the M2-1001 and M2-1028 and the neat stuff made by such well known shops as Barchetta, D-Technique, and RS Factory Stage. And seeing guys like Autokonexion with the fiberglass fastback, Smaeda with the fiberglass sill extensions, typesticky with his gorgeous custom interior and everybody else out there who decided to DIY have all been a big inspiration. Keep up the good work everybody and I hope we will continue to see more unique Roadster creations.
