This wicked Mazda Roadster owned by Danny Persaud was built to compete in the Caribbean Motor Racing Championship. It also runs in the Guyana Motor Racing & Sports Club Group 4 against really serious competitors like the Mazda RX-7 FD3S, Mitsubishi Lancer Evolution 9 and even a Ford Sierra RS Cosworth.

Racing in the Caribbean is serious business. However, because almost everything must be imported and many parts are expensive to obtain, racers must not only be fast but they must also be resourceful! Often times cars are modified using primitive tools and parts borrowed from other cars. Accordingly, Danny has modified his underdog with a Toyota 4A-GTE 4-cylinder 1.5L 16-valve engine and a massive Garett turbocharger! He chose this engine because the Toyota Corolla is a popular car in the Caribbean, therefore parts are relatively cheap and plentiful.

His goal is a curb weight of 1700lbs. and a power output of 600hp! With super wide tires, a big wing and lots of horsepower, this car is not only capable of holding its own against formidable opposition, it is capable of winning races with Danny behind the wheel!

There really isn't much to say here. The figures speak for themselves. 616hp measured at the rear wheels. It reaches the 1/4 mile in 8.871 seconds at 152.72mph. The motor used to be in a stock NA chassis Miata before the owner upgraded to this semi-tube frame NB chassis. The owner, Dennis Doney, also has a Porsche 993 TT that puts out 883.9 rwhp @ 5800rpm and 853.4 torque @ 5200rpm. Very impressive!

The Miata isn't the first choice amongst enthusiast who do drag racing but it seems there are a few Miata owners who test their cars on the 1/4 mile drag strip. Most have a V8 or rotary engine swap.

All this talk of drag racing Miatas reminds me of the famous Mecha-Doc car.






It seems drag racing Miatas is more popular in the Caribbean islands like Puerto Rico, Curacao and Trinidad. This is the late Luis Vivo's Bam Bam, one of the fastests "aspirado" rotaries (non-turbo or supercharger). It's a full drag car (fully-tubed chassis, air shifters, etc) powered by a Mazda 13B rotary with NOS. Best time: 8.37 @ 153 mph...

Here is yet another crazy Mazda Miata with a unique engine swap!! This car hails from Fort Meade, Florida where they have no emissions inspection requirements so the owner has decided to take his Volkswagen VR6 engine swap one step further by adding a turbocharger! With a custom short-runner intake manifold, power output is 325hp at the rear wheels.



The VR6 engine displaces 2.8L and has 2 valves per cylinder. It is mounted longitudinally and bolted to a Mazda RX-7 Type II transmission with an aluminum adapter plate and is held in place with custom motor mounts. The only engine accessory is the alternator. The rear differential is a Ford 8.8" unit from a Lincoln Continental Mark VIII (click here for more info) that features an aluminum center section and Factory Five Racing axles. The rear hubs have been re-drilled to 4x100. This setup retains the independent rear suspension.















It's always good to address the braking system when you triple the horsepower output. So this car has received a Mazda 929 master cylinder, 11" Volkswagen Corrado front rotors, FD3S RX7 front calipers and 2001+ Miata "Sport" rear brakes.


On the outside, this car features AWR widebody and a Racing Beat front bumper with a fresh coat of blue paint.

The Mazda Miata is a perfect platform for all sorts of engine swaps. We've all seen Roadsters with Ford 302 V8, GM LSx V8, Honda F20C I4, Mazda Wankel 13B and 20B rotary and FE3 I4 and KL-ZE V6, Nissan RB25/26 I6 and SR20DET I4, Toyota 1JZ and 2JZ I6 engine swaps. But I think this car may be the world's first ever (and only) Jaguar V12 engine in a Miata! This is crazy backyard engineering at its finest.

They even include a thrust gauge to help you measure the thrust angle. Ideally, the rear wheels will be perfectly aligned with the front wheels along the chassis center line.
