I posted about this before, but since the response was so big, I’d like to explain the details again.

I love the Mercedes-Benz G-Class, and I’ve kept driving mine while repairing it many times over the years.
The total repair cost has exceeded the original purchase price, but because I’ve continued fixing it and driving it, I’ve grown very attached to the car.

So, I decided to calculate the total cost of owning my 2014 G350 BlueTEC over the roughly 11 years it took to reach 753,000 km.

First, the new-car price was ¥12,500,000.
Converted to U.S. dollars:

12500000 ÷ 157.5 = 79,365
So, $79,365 at the current exchange rate of ¥157.5 per dollar.

Next, based on service records and receipts, the total repair cost so far is about ¥18,000,000.
Converted to U.S. dollars:

18000000 ÷ 157.5 = 114,285
So, $114,285.

In total:

30,500,000 yen (193,650 dollars) ÷ 753,000 km = 40.5 yen per km

And this excludes diesel fuel, highway tolls, and tire replacements.
This is simply the vehicle cost required to drive 1 km: 40.5 yen.

This is the reality of owning a G-Class for 11 years 😅
