2007年7月16日、UCC(User Created Content 使用者制作コンテンツ）で映像が公開され、その後公式プロフィールを掲載した。「少女たちの時代が来た。（소녀들의 시대가 왔다）」という意味で、歌手活動の他、映画俳優、タレント等様々な分野で活躍する多彩多能な10代のメンバー9人で構成、韓国はもちろんアジアをも席巻するという抱負を持って誕生したグループである。 一部のメンバーは中国語ができる。他にも英語、日本語ができるメンバーもいる。衣装やメイクも専門のイメージ・アドバイザーの意見を積極的に活用して、国際的展開を常に視野に入れている。
韓国では少女時代の韓国語での読み方「ソニョシデ」を略して「ソシ」と呼ぶが、韓国以外の国ではSo Nyeo Shi Dae(So Nyuh Shi Dae)のイニシャルだけを取ってSNSDと表記する場合が多い。
公式ファンクラブの名前はS♡NE(SO ONE / ソウォン)。 公式ファンクラブに入っていないファンも含め少女時代のファンは全てS♡NEと呼ばれる。 公式色は「パステルローズピンク」。
