Cell Snapshot accelerate antibiotic test to inhibit bacteria proliferation

Researchers have developed a test based on imaging to quickly and accurately determine the bacterial sensitivity to antibiotics. This method can reduce the testing time from about 16 hours to four hours, it can effectively help doctors treat patients more quickly, as well as curb a variety of resistance caused by excessive use of antibiotics and misuse of antibiotics - which has been upgraded and become a global health problem. When the bacteria proliferated in the case of antibiotics, they will be considered have the ability to resist drugs , however it will takes 16-20 hours to detect the bacteria growth .

To accelerate this process, Jungil Choi and his colleagues designed a test called single-cell morphological analysis (SCMA), it can track the growth of individual bacterial cells. A camera is capable to capture the delayed imaging of cells on chips , while the delayed imaging is caused by an antibiotic shapes changes , researchers can analyze the shape pattern in images to determine the cell growth.

Importantly, the test will take cell swelling and filaments formation into consideration, they are part of the normal cellular response, but it often is mistaken for cell growth. The researchers used a wide range of anti-microbial agents to test four kinds of standard bacterial strains and almost 200 hospital samples , including the notorious methicillin-resistant Staphylococcus aureus (MRSA) and Escherichia coli. Compared with the clinical gold standard, SCMA gave the same accurate result within 3-4 hours. The researchers plan to next year to turned over SCMA test to the Korea Food and Drug Safety Department approval.
