Today I fit the SR20DET engine into the 240z! We had custom engine and transmission mounts, as well as a custom length drive shaft. We had a little difficulty installing the engine, but eventually we got it to fit. The original cross member needs to be notched a little to get the engine in the correct spot, and the original motor mounts must be cut out to clear the SR alternator. Now that the engine is positioned correctly, I will weld in the new motor mounts.

The SR20DET is much smaller than the inline 6 cylinder engine that was originally installed. The new custom motor mounts position the SR20DET engine further back (behind the front wheels), and also lower the engine mounting position. This should make the handling much better!

Today I sanded down all of the areas in the engine bay where the panels join, and stitch welded them together. This should increase rigidity and make the car more stable. We will eventually do the entire car like this, but since the engine is out, it is the best time to complete the engine bay. These pictures are from halfway through the welding. I finished all of the area in the picture that are not welded.

There were also some rusted holes under the original battery tray. I removed the battery tray and will move the battery to the trunk. While I had the welder out, I also repaired the holes.

Tomorrow I plan on sanding the cleaning the engine bay, and then painting it matte black.

Today I started the motor swap on my friends 240z. It's the same car that we wrapped in matte black vinyl a few months ago. I took all the parts off of my s13 and sold the car, and my friend bought my sr20det motor and transmission. The sr20det will be installed into his 240z, and I think it will be VERY fast since the car is so small and light weight.

Today I removed the old engine -

Removed the hood, grill, radiator, and disconnected everything from the motor.


Attached the cherry picker, and disconnected the motor mounts, trans mounts, exhaust, and started to slowly pull it out.

Next we plan on cleaning and painting the engine bay, stitch welding the engine bay, and then installing the custom motor mounts. The sr20det will then be installed along with the custom driveshaft. We'll then need to make custom intercooler piping and figure out the radiator and wiring.

Yesterday we attended an autocross event at Auto Club Speedway. This is the first autocross event that I have attended since my new engine and gears were installed, and it was very fun! I also got a new video camera, and used it to record some of the runs.
