A few weeks ago I was offered a new sponsorship with SSR Wheels. The only problem was that I already had a couple sets of wheels, 1 for track and 1 for street, so was hesitant to commit until I could sell at least one of my existing sets. While I was more than happy with my current setup, I always felt their only negative was their weight. The SSR Type-F wheels I was looking at getting weighed in at 5-6 pounds lighter per wheel, which is about a 20% difference. This is huge when it comes to weight savings.
I posted up my wheels for sale on a couple of forums, and I guess they were priced right because within the week they were sold. I gave Danh at SSR a call last Friday morning and told him I'd like to go ahead with the deal, and headed over to pick up the wheels. When I arrived and inspected the wheels, I was amazed at how much lighter they were. I ended up going with the SSR Type-F in 18x9.5 +22, and 18x10.5 +25 in the matte black finish. While not aggressive by today's "flush" trend (they offer more aggressive offsets for those interested), they will allow for me to run a much meatier tire than my previous wheels.
Overall the finish of the wheel is flawless, and the entire wheel inside and out, is powder coated. They come double boxed (definitely good news if they're getting shipped to you), and complete with valve stems, caps, and decals. The only other thing you'll want to get if you don't already have them, are a set of hub rings. Immediately noticeable once the wheels were mounted on the car, was that they have huge brake clearance. My last wheels had small barrels, which meant I would only be able to run a BBK that was 328mm or smaller. The SSR's look like they have room for just about any BBK I want to run, so this definitely widens my options.
We're still trying to figure out when the next track event is, so I can't really comment on any changes in performance yet. Although I'm pretty sure the 20+ pounds of rotational mass lost will add a slight increase in acceleration, braking, and handling. I'll definitely post up another review with times after the next track event. As far as looks and quality go, I am extremely happy with the new setup and am looking forward to testing them on the track!
