I am planning on changing the suspension and rear wheel wells on the 1965 Mustang. From the factory, the rear suspension is leaf springs, and the wheel wells are very small. Both of these things limit the size of the wheels and tires that can be used. In order to use wider tires (I would like to use 315mm tires) I will need to change the rear suspension type and install larger rear wheel wells. This is a big job!

Before I can do anything else, I need to prepare the car by removing all of the suspension and the rear end. Here is a picture of the rear end fully assembled. You can see the leaf springs, shocks, and rear end/axle assembly.


After a couple of hours work, the entire suspension and rear end have been removed. The car is now ready for me to start the wheel well modifications.


Here is a picture of the wheel well modification kit that I purchased... not only does the wheel well require modification, the frame must be cut and modified as well. This means there will need to be a lot of cutting and welding to complete this modification!


With all the welding necessary, I recently purchased a new Miller welder... this should make the job much easier!

I first purchased my 1965 Mustang in 1994 and drove it daily for roughly 10 years. It has been in storage ever since. This past weekend I finally picked it up and towed it home. Over the next few months I will begin restoring it.

I fabricated a rear under diffuser for the G35. Since my car has a single exit exhaust, there is a large empty space behind the rear bumper where the original factory exhaust was installed. This empty space would catch air and act as a parachute at high speeds, slightly slowing the car down. I cut a large section of the rear bumper off to allow for increased airflow, and fabricated the rear under diffuser to go from the rear cross member to the rear crash bar. This is the only picture I have of it, but I will take more pictures when I get a chance.

I removed the door panels, which left no place to mount the window switches. I removed all of the unnecessary wires out of the door (speakers, locks and window controls). I extended all the wires for the window controls and door locks and moved them to the center of the car. I also removed the center console and some small miscellaneous interior pieces.




I added a NACA duct to the rear drivers side. This duct is attached to a pump with a filter, the hose attaches to a fitting on my helmet and provides me with clean cool air during a race.

Here is the final installed window with black hardware. The material is Lexan, which is much stronger and lighter than glass. I will be replacing the large window next, which I think is going to be much more difficult!


The Lexan is attached to the car with rivnuts and stainless steel hardware.


I first cut the Lexan out of a large sheet, drilled all holes, and then painted the black border. This shows the painted border of the Lexan and the rubber gasket I made.
