G35 Front Tube Frame Build - Part 2

G35 Front Tube Frame Build - Part 2This weekend I built the mounting brackets for the dual core engine oil cooler. The lower radiator support was also fabricated. I still must complete the following:

1. brackets for the headlights
2. brackets for the front splitter
3. brackets for power steering cooler
4: front bumper cover quick disconnect fitting install
5. front tow hook install
6. front bumper grill mounting
7. ducting and air diverters to direct airflow through fluid coolers and radiator

G35 Front Tube Frame Build - Part 1

G35 Front Tube Frame Build - Part 1While I am waiting for the 6MT transmission to arrive so I can finish the conversion, I've decided to start building a tube front end. It is not complete yet, and all pieces are only tack welded on for now (I will TiG weld the entire part when it is complete).

This is the main upper tube, and it was the most complicated piece to make because of all the bends. I took measurements and carefully bent it to match the contours of the factory composite core support.

Once I was happy with the upper tube, I completely removed the factory core support. Here you can see all the different fluid coolers I have. 1. Power Steering Cooler, 2. 5AT Transmission Cooler, 3. Dual Core Engine Oil Cooler.

I created brackets that will mount to the shock towers and temporarily attached them with Cleco Pins. I then cut the upper tube to the correct length and tack welded it onto the brackets.

I checked to make sure the hood still closed properly, and then added the headlight brackets and front bumper brackets. The dual core oil cooler is crooked because it is not attached to anything yet.

Brackets were created to mount the front bash bar to the factory location. The Aerocatch hood pins were also mounted to the upper bar.

I will work on it this weekend and post more progress pictures. Thanks!

5AT to 6MT Conversion Part 1

5AT to 6MT Conversion Part 1My G35 has been in storage for almost 2 years. The last time I raced it the automatic transmission was failing. Since I must change the transmission anyway, I've decided to convert it from automatic to manual. I purchased all of the parts needed (except for transmission and clutch, I will buy those soon). All of the parts arrived quickly, and the weather was very nice, so last weekend I got some lunch (In and Out... very good hamburgers!) and started the conversion -

Conversion parts purchased (all parts are used):
6MT Handbrake
6MT Clutch Pedal
6MT Brake Pedal
6MT Driveshaft
6MT Transmission Crossmember
6MT Clutch Master Cylinder
6MT Clutch Line
6MT Clutch Piping

The conversion process is not too difficult. You must remove the foot brake to make room for the clutch pedal. To mount the clutch pedal you must fabricate an upper mount, otherwise the clutch pedal is not mounted strong enough. The 6mt brake pedal replaces the 5at pedal, the only difference is that it is smaller to make room for the clutch pedal. The handbrake only requires a hole to be enlarged in the transmission tunnel, and mounting points to be fixed.

The most difficult part is positioning the clutch master cylinder in the correct spot. There are no markings or existing holes for mounting. I took careful measurements from my friends 6mt car and was able to position it correctly. The only other fabrication needed was for the clutch piping in the inner fender. There was no place to mount the lines and bracket, so I had to make a small bracket and weld it in place.

All parts are currently installed. I will purchase the transmission and clutch after the holidays and finish the conversion (I thought installing all supporting parts would take much longer than 1 weekend).

New CNC Machine Arrived!

New CNC Machine Arrived! While I was in Japan our new CNC machine arrived at the shop. The shop already had a 3 axis manual mill and a metal lathe, but the new CNC machine will allow us to create parts in-house that we previously had to send out for machining.
