When I picked up my Mercedes EQS 450+ from the dealership in Izumisano, Osaka, I surprised both the salesperson and the sales manager.
My plan was simple:
Pick up the car at 10:00 AM, drive to Tokyo, meet my wife around 9:00 PM, and then continue all the way home to Chiba.
The reaction was immediate.
"You're driving that far today?"
I could understand their concern. Even though EVs have come a long way, a 600 km (370+ mile) trip on delivery day is not exactly how most people introduce themselves to a new electric vehicle.
But I wanted to find out what the EQS was really capable of.
And what better way than a real-world road trip?
The journey started on local roads from Izumisano to Hamamatsu. From there, I joined the expressway at Hamamatsu IC and continued to Tokyo IC before returning to local roads for the final stretch.
By the end of the day, I had covered approximately 600 km (about 373 miles).
Here's the part that surprised me.
The only charging stop I made was a single 12-minute session at a 50 kW DC fast charger in Hamamatsu.
That's it.
No charging anxiety.
No waiting around.
No hunting for stations.
Just one quick stop.
When I finally arrived home in Chiba, the battery still had 16% remaining, and the car estimated another 145 km (90 miles) of available range.
Honestly, I didn't expect the result to be this good.
What impressed me most wasn't just the efficiency. It was the overall experience.
The EQS is incredibly quiet at highway speeds. The ride quality is outstanding. Hours behind the wheel felt surprisingly effortless, and by the end of the trip I felt far less fatigued than I would have in many traditional luxury sedans.
The EQS has received its share of criticism for its styling. Some people love it, some don't.
But after spending an entire day driving one across Japan, I came away with a much greater appreciation for what Mercedes-Benz was trying to achieve.
This car isn't about aggressive styling or making a statement.
It's about making long-distance travel effortless.
Before buying the EQS, I spent months researching charging infrastructure, battery longevity, operating costs, depreciation, and real-world range.
This trip answered all of those questions in a single day.
Sometimes the best test isn't reading specifications.
It's simply getting behind the wheel and driving 600 kilometers home.
The EQS passed that test with ease.
