Tragedy! Caboose Lost in the Air Attack. It was lucky that I got a cheap freight car on an internet auction. But the vehicle was unfortunately lost without running even once, by a calamity unexpected...
In the first half of the last year I bought a 1/150 "N-gauge" model of type Wafu-28000 freight car of former Japan National Rail (see photo 1, though it's a pity that one of its couplers is bent), on an internet auction. It was a very old toy vehicle made in British Hong Kong, probably in 1970s or 80s, with a trade mark of Tomix. Wafu-28000 was a boxcar with a hand brake and a tiny section for the train conductor. The production was begun during the WWII and continued up to 1946. All the cars of this type has already been scrapped until 1968.
I bought it in order to use as a caboose for the tramway department of New Japan Sky Railway Company, the fictional monorail business which is a stage of this weblog. Needless to say, I imagined the existence of this vehicle, based on Tofu-400 which had been used by Sotetsu Railways until 1994. But different from Sotetsu's Tofus, all of which were black, I wanted to redecorate the freight car in olive as same as other vehicles of my fictional tramway business.
Because my sister in law has suddenly passed away in the summer of 2012, now I live with my young nieces in ages 5 and 8. It makes me difficult to enjoy tinkering a model train. Especially the processes applying some chemicals, for example colouring the car body with acrylic paint, or bleaching it with isopropyl alcohol (IPA), have become more difficult than they were before. I have locked up my IPA tank in the refrigerator for long time.
Because this New Year vacation was long, I got enough time to paint a model train at last. I tried to colour two vehicles from "Tetsudo Collection" which is a series of cheap model train, in a combination of cream yellow and deep olive. But after a long blank I couldn't finish it successfully (see photo 2). So I decided to dip them into IPA tank, and did not forget the Wafu freight car which I bought many months ago to be put with them. In spite of cold weather IPA acted well and paints and markings were cleanly removed from the three cars. I washed the car bodies with lukewarm water and allowed them to dry on a balcony. Then I went out to take a lunch with my nieces.
After about two hours we came home. I opened the door to a balcony to recover the three vehicles of model train, and was surprised to find that there was nothing there except one body of Odakyu's 1600 type train. It was located about two feet south from its original place. And two vehicle bodies were disappeared. Wind blew them? As a result of a wide-range search, the body of Oigawa Railway's model 312, the tail section of which was transplanted from Odakyu 1600 type by me, was found on the ground, about 12 feet below. However the freight car Wafu could finally not been found.
Jesus! As strong wind didn't blow yesterday, it could not bring the vehicle for such a long distance. The body of freight car Wafu-28000 must have been attacked and seized by some kind of air power. And this is my personal idea but it must have been a crow!
