80年代ハッチバック

80年代ハッチバック I'm writing a new magazine article about various cars. This time, it's about a few 1980s-era hatchbacks of around 1.0L to 1.3L engine.

These are the five cars I think I'll be writing about (I may change my mind).

Subaru Justy (first-generation)

We got the first-generation Justy from 1987 to 1994, only the 1.2L 4WD type. These are quite rare now, in a year I will probably see 2 or 3. In the 1980s, Subaru cars were mostly sold in rural areas so you will see these on farms sometimes. The Justy 4WD was fairly popular, since not many small cars had 4WD at that time. I'm surprised that when I did some research, I can't find many in Japan! Are they rare now?

Nissan Micra (March) K10

These were available for 10 years! We got 1.0 and 1.2 engines, but we didn't get the Turbo or Super Turbo, although I have seen some imported Super Turbos. These were extremely popular, one of the most popular Japanese cars sold in the UK. Even today, I will still see one of these every few days. The fuel economy and reliability is still really good, I think.

Suzuki SA310/Swift (Cultus) SA

I haven't seen one of these for a while! The first type was called "SA310" (3-Cylinder, 1.0L). The later version with different headlights was called "Swift" and they changed to 4-Cylinder 1.3L. Later, we got the GTi version with 1.3L DOHC 16-Valve engine. The GTi is considered a classic performance car here, a good condition GTi would cost about £3000 (¥400,000) now!

Mazda 121 (Ford Festiva) DA

We didn't get the Ford Festiva here, because we already had a popular European-built car, the Ford Fiesta. But we got the Festiva with "Mazda 121" badges sold through Mazda dealers from 1988 to 1991. You could get a 1.1L and 1.3L engine. For a car of this size, a 1.3L engine is a big size, so they are quite fast! There was also an open roof version called "Suntop". These are quite rare because they only sold them for a short time.

Toyota Starlet EP70

The FF type Starlet was very popular and available from 1984 to 1989, but it's rare now. If I'm lucky, I will see 1 or 2 each year. I think they had some problems with rust. In the UK, we only got the 1.0L version. However, it was a 12-valve engine, so it was quite powerful. The main rival was the K10 March/Micra.

I still have a lot to write, but I enjoy looking at old photos of these cars.

rent old cars so I can drive, haha.

Hi,
These cars you mentioned used to be popular in Japan, they remind me of my childhood in particular My sixth form class teacher of my primary school drove a Suzuki Cultus.
Subaru Justy is a bigger version of Rex a micro car 軽自動車 in Japan.
We cannot see one of them and they are quite rare now because they didn't attract any petrolheads in Japan because of its trifle origination.

1st Micra/March was one of best seller cars in Japan but we never see one now.BTW I feel Nissan cars tend to rust,I live in Hokkaido the most northern district of Japan and huge amount of sodium-chloride is scattered on the roads in the winter,we can see Nissan and Mitsubishi cars terribly rotten.
What do you think?

Festiva,I saw plenty of them in Hiroshima,in which the head office of Mazda is located and it's my birthplace/I had lived there for twelve years, however we can never catch a glimpse of one now.

We saw lots of Starets these days but we can hardly see them nowadays.
I drove 1.3 litre NA one just once and it was fun to drive i remember.

I do admire you have abundant knowledge of cars we cannot see now /remember exactly today, you're an absolute petrolhead of old Jap cars.

I think some Japanese cars are more rare
in Japan than the UK. Sometimes I think
I should set up a business to export these
cars back to Japan, or set up a museum
there, haha.

Micra K10, there's still a few thousand of
them left. They were often in the Top 10
most popular cars sold here. The photo I
used is the car owned by my friend's son.
I helped him find an original radio for it
and a few other parts.

I live in northern England so our climate
is quite cold in winter, we have a lot of
rust problems too. Some car makers
started to use better rust protection
in the 1980s, using more underbody
coating for UK cars. So the reason so
many K10 Micras are still here is the
extra rust protection.

Thank you very much! I try to research
cars all the time. I'm always reading old
car brochures. Although I'm interested
in all types of car, I think the 1980s-era
cars of Japan are the most interesting
to me so I know most of them well.

I feel like driving around as it's a lovely day here. I'll have my body massaged:)

These cars you try to write are quite rare.
Interestingly,at least I was not interested in them at that time. However I do love such old school cars these days. I have no idea why.

Anyway, hope we can buy the magazine written your article. Can you ask the publish company to do it for Japanese enthusiasts lol

Have a good day;)

It's cold here, colder than usual. We even
had snow this week. I did some slides in
the parking area, haha!

Sometimes a car is interesting because
it's different now or your memories. My
father drove a Ford Sierra for most of my
childhood. It wasn't interesting at the time
because I would see hundreds every day.
But if I see one now, I really want to
look at it!

I'd like them to sell it in Japan. I want to
see what people think about it!
