クラシックカーショー "Festival of the Unexceptional"

クラシックカーショー "Festival of the Unexceptional"I was away at the weekend, I went to a classic car show. This one is quite unusual, because it's a show for ordinary cars. You can attend in any type of car, but the main type is old family cars and non-sports models. It's a long way from me, about 210km to the south. I wanted to take my BF Familia-323 1.5, but almost the entire journey is on 70mph (112km/h) roads and it's a long way to drive with a 3-speed automatic. Maybe next time!

The entrance sign was on an Austin Allegro 3, a very ordinary old British family car. People used to make jokes about these being a terrible car. I liked them, though...

When I walked into the show, I was amazed that the first car I saw was a GC Capella-626! I have one of these, but a later model. I went up to the owner and said "I have one of these" and he was surprised, haha.

It's a GLX model like mine, but an earlier type. There's only a few small differences between the early and later type though.

His car has headlamp washers! I don't know why my car doesn't have them.

These are the original hubcaps for the early type. I think they're one of the best 1980s hubcap designs. I've got a set of these too, but really my car should have plastic hubcaps. I have both types.

The main difference is the interior. The early type has the switches coming out of the side, but the later type is a more simple design.

Nearby there was a UK-built Bluebird. We didn't receive the U12 Bluebird, instead we refer to the T12/T72 Auster as Bluebird.

I took a picture of this because it's similar to a car my father owned for many years. He had a Rover 214 SLi in white, using a Rover DOHC 1.4L 16-Valve.

This one is a Rover 216 GSi, which uses a Honda SOHC 1.6L 16-Valve engine.

Nearby, there was a UK-built Honda Concerto, the Honda version of the Rover 200-series. These are different to the Concerto made in Japan, with a different suspension design. The UK version has MacPherson strut type suspension, Japanese version uses double wishbone type.

It's a 1.6i-16, so it has the same engine as the Honda 216 GSi above.

Here's a very rare Honda, the N600. This was the export version of the N360, using a 598cc engine for a higher top speed.

The badge was updated too.

It's quite hard to see the engine. The battery looks really big in the photo, but it was quite a small one!

Like my Quintet, it's a Hondamatic.

This car belongs to a friend of mine, it's a Datsun Laurel 240L C231. I have driven it before, the engine is so smooth. It uses the famous L24 6-cylinder, same as the export type S30Z 240Z.

Even though it was an event for ordinary cars, a few sports cars visited such as this Mitsubishi Starion Turbo. This one is the later type known as "wide body". I'd really like one of these, although I prefer the early "narrow body" type.

Later on, this FA 323-Familia appeared! For me, this was the best car at the show. I knew the driver, though it's the first time I've seen this car. I have one of these, but it's a later type wagon. My wagon has a lot of rust problems so it may be a long time before I can drive it, though.

This is the early type known as "bug eye". I think it's one of the best-looking 1970s family cars.

The seat design looks great! I really like vinyl seats with patterned fabric designs.

It's got a sporty steering wheel and a lot of wood trim. You can also see it's an automatic gearbox, this is the 1400 Auto model. I think it's a 3AT like my car.

The back end is good on this car too, I like the tail lights.

My friend Ratdat was there in his WP312 Bluebird. Since he's a friend and I've seen his car a few times, I forgot to take any photos of it. Luckily I found this photo. His car is the only one of his type in Europe. You can read about it here.

The same photographer took a picture of my Prelude next to it, haha!

And my friend with the Piazza JR130 was here too, but I also forgot to take his photo. I see his car all the time anyway...

Later on, a few of us went for a meal at a local pub and talked about cars for a long time. I had to travel back a long way, so I didn't get home until about 3:00, haha. I used a full tank of fuel and got 400 miles (644km).

Since I was driving late at night in warm weather, there's also a lot of bugs on my car. They go towards the headlights, I think.

Anyway, that's it!

もっと古い写真

もっと古い写真I found this old photo from my town. This one is really interesting to me. It's a Pub called the "Whinney Moor Hotel". A lot of older Pubs in England are called Hotel or Inn, because in the past travellers would stay there. Some of them still do, actually!

The house I grew up in from around 1985 to 1990 was only about 100m from here, then we moved to another house on the other side about 300m away until around 1997 (I can't remember). We moved further away, though I would still walk past it on the way to school. I still drive past it today.

Anyway, I thought it would be interesting because of the cars here. The car on the left is a Vauxhall Viva HC, a popular 1970s family car. On the right, it's a Mercedes-Benz W114. But I want to look at the two in the middle!

Here's a Datsun Sunny 120Y B211 (later type). I looked up the vehicle details from the old number plate, the paint was maroon. First registered January 1978. Last vehicle tax in October 1987. Maybe it's still around inside a garage, but it's unlikely. I really like the hubcaps on this model, Datsun fans sometimes call them "golf ball" hubcaps. The owner fitted a very tall roof rack, but I've noticed roof racks aren't popular nowadays. Most cars don't even have anywhere you could attach a roof rack.

This one is a first-generation Ford Escort. I can't find it on the government numberplate database, so I don't have any details. It has square headlights, so it's probably a high grade model like "XL", the basic and sports models have round headlights. When I was a very young child, this was similar to the car my father was driving! He had a 2-door Escort like this, but it was a simple Base model. It should have had a 1.1-litre engine, but a previous owner changed it to a 1.6-litre engine, so it was fast! We didn't have much money then, so at the time it was just a cheap old car. The engine exploded around 1986 and he couldn't afford repair it, so he went back to riding a motorbike. He can't remember the model, but I think it was a Yamaha V70. We didn't have a car again until a few years later!

Anyway, if I see any more photos I'll show you.

クラシックカーショー

クラシックカーショーI went to the local classic car show. It's only a few minutes away from my house, so I go every year. This year there was a lot of rain and I only had my compact camera, so I only took a few photos. But I saw two interesting cars!

This Datsun Cherry 120A F-Ⅱ Wagon was really cool, I talked to the owner.

It's the F10 generation, my friend previously owned a Coupe model of this.

There was also this Honda Accord Aerodeck. I've wanted to buy one of these for a while, but the price is usually too high. The European model of the Accord 4-door had fixed headlights, but the Aerodeck always had these flip lights.

The condition was really good, I think it has been repainted.

Unfortunately since there was a lot of rain, it wasn't as busy as usual, but I was happy to see those two cars at least.

「Retro Japanese」夏2016!

「Retro Japanese」夏2016!I received this in the mail today, the latest issue of the "Retro Japanese" car magazine. The first one was popular enough that the publisher decided to publish it four times a year, so this one is the Summer 2016 edition.

I'm surprised how many people are in this magazine who I already know. Of course, I know the editor and my friend with the Piazza writes for the same publisher. But there's a friend with a Cherry Europe and N12 Cherry (Pulsar) and another friend with his B10 Sunny, C110 Laurel and N13 Sunny (Pulsar). I also noticed a Mitsubishi Galant GTO owner's name, I got some Nissan parts from him a few years ago.

I did an article about some older Daihatsu cars. "Daihatsu. That's Who." was an old advertising slogan from the 1980s, I remember seeing it on a sticker on the back of a Charade. The magazine is still on sale, so I've hidden the words, I don't want to get into trouble!

I wrote about the diesel version of the Charade G11, known as the Charade G30. It's such an unusual car! It's amazing to me that Daihatsu offered four different types of 1.0-litre engine - Petrol, Petrol Turbo, Diesel, Diesel Turbo.

As a contributor, I also wrote about two cars I'm using at the moment, but you probably already know about these!

My friend also wrote a big feature about the Isuzu Piazza Turbo JR130.

This one is his car, you may remember it.

Anyway, I'm glad that the UK finally has a magazine about these types of cars. Maybe one day you'll see it for sale in Japan, haha. Although you can buy it here if you are interested, they can send it by mail. I order magazines from Japan sometimes, usually 高速有鉛デラックス and HACHIMARU HERO. It takes a long time to read them in Japanese though.

シャレードG10

シャレードG10I've finished my article about Daihatsu cars. I scanned a lot of photos from old brochures to use in the article, but I thought it may be interesting to show you some of them. These are all for the first-generation Charade G10.

Although the Charade was launched in 1977, we didn't get them in the UK until 1979. At this time, Daihatsu only had a small amount of dealers, so the early type G10 with round lights is extremely rare. I don't think there's any left in the UK. My friend Ratdat had one, but he sold it and it was exported to another country (I can't remember where).

In the UK, we only received the 5-door model in two grades - XG and XTE with 5MT.

This is the XTE interior with fabric seats.

The Charade G10 received good reviews. Car journalists really liked the unusual 3-cylinder engine.

Since the engine uses balancer shafts, it was smooth to drive. For an engine designed in the 1970s, it's really advanced!

Small hatchbacks were popular in the UK and the rest of Europe. The main rival in the UK was the Datsun Cherry (Pulsar N10).

The dashboard design is neat and interesting.

Here's a silver one from the front of the brochure.

I like the back end!

The facelift model was more popular, because it was sold here for a longer time and people had become more familiar with the Daihatsu brand. There's still a few of these around, but they are quite rare. You could get an automatic model called "Daimatic".

This is the interior from a later model, the seat design is more plain.

I think the Charade G10 was a very important car. If Daihatsu didn't make it, I don't think we would have so many cars with 3-cylinder engines today. Anyway, in a few months maybe I'll be able to show you the whole article instead of just a few photos.

If I get time, I'll show you some of the other cars photos later.
