Subaru has published Service Bulletin # 02-103-07 that identifies a factory design related problem with premature clogging of the oil mesh screen located inside the oiling system that supplies the turbo charger on all model turbo charged cars. A clogged screen will result in oil starvation and turbo charger failure. Subaru has since published Service Bulletin #02-110-10R indicating that 2010 MY and prior turbocharged engines continue to require oil and filter change intervals of 3,750 miles (6,000 km) or 3 3/4 months, while all 2011 MY turbocharged engines have returned to the original requirement of 7,500 miles (12,000 km) or 7 1/2 months, and they are required to use synthetic oil. Due to the issues outlined in this document, AMSOIL recommends following Subaru drain interval recommendations.
This bulletin is informational puroposes only
Turbochrged engins require proper maintenace especially when the vehicle is used under severe driving conditions , such as moderate to hard acceletion and engine braking on a somewhat regular basis.
In any case, iti is recommended that the engine oil and filter be changed every 3,750miles(6,000km) or 3-3/4months.
In additional, the mesh screen which is located inside the banjo bolt that secures the turbo-charger oil supply pipe to the back of the right side cylinder hed should be checked to make sure it is not cloogged or restricted especially if the condition of the oil is questionable or as to when the last oil change was performed. if the condition of the oil is questionable or as to oil supply to the tubo resulting in failure. The oil supply pipe should also be checked to make sure that there are no obstructions. Not:The mesh screen is only available with a replace-ment banjo bolt.
Make sure the mesh screen is installed in the proper direction, incorrect installation will cut off oil supply to the turbo
Do not confuse the oil supply mesh screen with the Active Valve Contorol System(AVCS) union screw filter. Refer to Service Bulletin 02-97-05, dated 10/06/05.
When the vehicle is used under severe draiving conditions, the engine oil is consumed more quikly than unde normal driving conditions due to high intake manifold vacuum during engine braiking and higher tempertures, the engine oil level should be checcked at every fuel fill up.
For additional examples of severe driving conditions, refer to the Warranty & Maintenace Booklet
