New Miata caught with its hood up: NC similarities abound, and no turbocharger in sight

Mazda has been mum on the details of the next MX-5 Miata -- they haven't even officially popped the hood yet, which is why we were excited to catch a glimpse of the Miata's engine bay and our clearest look yet at the full Roadster SkyActiv package.



Previous glimpses at the engine came from seeing the chassis at the New York auto show. But now we've learned that like the NC MX-5, the battery is up front, near the grille. We know that there's a four-point strut brace, just like the NC. And we saw that the packaging is very tight in there -- the engine is pushed well back with the airbox up front, and the coil-on-plugs are very prominent up top. There could be a plastic shield over the engine when the Miata enters production, but for now, that satin silver valve cover harkens to the 1.6- and 1.8-liter engines from the first two generations.
