そうだよ。サンタクロースは本当にいるのだよ。

　これは有名な話なのでご存知の方もいるでしょう。ふと思い出したので、タイミングもいいことだし書くことにしました。

　1897年のこと。ニューヨークに住むバージニア・オハンロンという当時8歳の少女が、ザ・サンという新聞紙に「サンタクロースって本当にいるんですか?」という手紙を書きました。サン紙は社説でこれに答えました。その社説を書いたのは後にフランシス・チャーチであると明らかにされました。

こんにちは。

私は８さいです。サンタクロースなんかいないって言うともだちがいます。サンしんぶんに書いてあることならほんとうだとパパはいつも言っています。ほんとうのことを教えてください。サンタクロースはいるのですか。

バージニア、君の友達はまちがってるよ。その子たちはなんでも疑ってかかろうとする懐疑主義に毒されているのだ。そんな人は自分の目で見ないと信じないのだね。自分の小さな頭で理解できないものはみんな存在しないものだと考えているのだよ。人の精神というものはね、バージニア、おとなでも、子どもでも小さいものなのだ。この広大な宇宙では人間というものは、その知力にかけてはただの虫、ありみたいなものなのだよ。人間をとりまく無限の世界と比べてごらん。あらゆる真実と知識を意のままに把握することのできる神の知力と比べてごらん。

そうだよ、バージニア、サンタクロースはいるのだよ。愛、思いやり、ひたむきな心というものがあるように、サンタクロースもいるのだ。こういった心をもっている人はたくさんいて、君の人生に無上の美と喜びをもたらしてくれるじゃないか。サンタクロースのいない世の中なんて、そんなのはさびしいじゃないか。バージニアみたいな子がいなければこの世の中がさびしくなるのと同じことだよ。子どもらしい心、詩、ロマンスがあるからこそ、この世のつらいこともがまんできる。手でふれたり、目で見る以外に喜びというものがなくなってしまうじゃないか。子供の時代があるおかげでこの世に満ちている永遠の光が消えてしまうよ。

サンタクロースを信じないって！ 妖精も信じないのかな。パパに頼んで人を雇ってもらい、クリスマスのイブ、あちこちの煙突を見張ってもらったとしよう。サンタクロースが煙突を降りてくるのを見なかったとしても、それがどんな証明になるだろう。だれにもサンタクロースは見えないんだ。でもそれでサンタクロースがいないって証拠にはならない。この世で一番ほんとうのものというのは、子供にもおとなにも目には見えないものなのだよ。妖精が草の上で踊っているのを見たことがあるかい。もちろん、ないさ。でもそれが妖精はいないという証拠にはならない。この世の中にあるもので、目に見えないすばらしいものをすべて頭に描いたり、想像したりするということはだれにもできないことなのだよ。

あかちゃんのがらがらをこわせば、どうして中から音がでるのか調べてみることはできる。でも、目に見えない世界をおおっているベールがあって、これは世の中の一番の力持ちのそのまた一番の力持ちがみんなで力をあわせても引き裂くことはできないのだよ。このカーテンを開けて天上の美とその向こうにある栄光を目にすることができるのは、信じる心、想像、詩、愛、ロマンスだけなのだ。これらは現実に存在するものだろうか。バージニア、いいかね、これらほど、ほんもので変わらぬものはこの世にないのだよ。

サンタクロースがいないって！　とんでもない。サンタクロースは永遠に生きているのだよ。バージニア、これから千年後、いや、一万年の十倍たったときでも、サンタクロースは子供たちの心によろこびをもたらし続けてくれるのだよ。

Dear Editor ---

I am 8 years old. Some of my little friends say there is no Santa Claus. Papa says: If you see it in The Sun, it's so. Please tell me the truth, is there a Santa Claus?

Virginia, your little friends are wrong. They have been affected by the skepticism of a skeptical age. They do not believe except they see. They think that nothing can be which is not comprehensible by their little minds. All minds, Virginia, whether they be men's or children's, are little. In this great universe of ours man is a mere insect, an ant, in his intellect, as compared with the boundless world about him, as measured by the intelligence capable of grasping the whole of truth and knowledge.

Yes, Virginia, there is a Santa Claus. He exists as certainly as love and generosity and devotion exist, and you know that they abound and give to your life its highest beauty and joy. Alas! How dreary would be the world if there were no Santa Claus! It would be as dreary as if there were no Virginias. There would be no childlike faith then, no poetry, no romance to make tolerable this existence. We should have no enjoyment, except in sense and sight. The eternal light with which childhood fills the world would be extinguished.

Not believe in Santa Claus! You might as well not believe in fairies! You might get your papa to hire men to watch in all the chimneys on Christmas Eve to catch Santa Claus, but even if they did not see Santa Claus coming down, what would that prove? Nobody sees Santa Claus, but that is no sign that there is no Santa Claus. The most real things in the world are those that neither children nor men can see. Did you ever see fairies dancing on the lawn? Of course not, but that's no proof that they are not there. Nobody can conceive or imagine all the wonders there are unseen and unseeable in the world.

You tear apart the baby's rattle and see what makes the noise inside, but there is a veil covering the unseen world which not the strongest man, not even the united strength of all the strongest men that ever lived, could tear apart. Only faith, fancy, poetry, love, romance, can push aside that curtain and view and picture the supernal beauty and glory beyond. Is it all real? Ah, Virginia, in all this world there is nothing else real and abiding.

No Santa Claus! Thank God he lives, and he lives forever. A thousand years from now, Virginia, nay, ten times ten thousand years from now, he will continue to make glad the heart of childhood.
