Ex-LAPD Sergeant Involved in Rodney King Beating Sentenced to Probation in DUI Case


former Los Angeles police sergeant who served a prison sentence for his role in the beating of Rodney King was sentenced to three years of probation Wednesday after he pleaded no contest to driving under the influence of alcohol.

Stacey Koon, 67, entered a no contest plea to a misdemeanor count of driving with a blood alcohol level of .08% or higher during a pretrial hearing in the Santa Clarita Courthouse. A misdemeanor count of driving under the influence of alcohol that had been filed against him was dropped, according to Los Angeles County Superior Court records.

A judge also ordered Koon to complete a three-month DUI class, pay a $390 fine and install an ignition interlock device on his vehicle, according to court records and City News Service.

Koon was arrested May 1 after he crashed his vehicle into a parked car in Castaic, authorities said.

Koon and three other LAPD officers were charged with excessive force in the 1991 beating of King, which was captured on videotape. Riots broke out across Los Angeles after the officers were acquitted in 1992.


Though acquitted in state court, Koon was one of two officers convicted of federal civil rights violations in connection with the beating. He served 30 months in prison and was released in 1995.

FORD TO END POLICE SEDAN PRODUCTION
Ford announced Wednesday that it plans to end production of the Taurus and other sedans to meet growing consumer demand for SUVs. By 2020, almost 90 percent of the Ford portfolio in North America will be trucks, SUVs and commercial vehicles, including electrified versions.

U.S. sales of large cars have declined by 34 percent in the last five years, and there is “significant unmet demand” for Explorer as consumers abandon traditional sedans for SUVs according to officials.

That lack of demand also included the Ford Police Interceptor sedan. The sedan was once projected to take over 75% of the police car market but it was the SUV version that soared. Just last year, the SUV took 51% of the market and it continues to rise.

Ford also is phasing out the Fiesta, Fusion and C-Max sedans over the next few years. The remaining Ford car portfolio will feature the Mustang and an all-new Focus Active crossover coming out next year.

Ford announced revenue of $42 billion and net income of $1.7 billion during its first quarter earning call Wednesday, both of which were up year over year and beat analyst expectations. The automaker is targeting even better results going forward with a strategy that entails allocating capital towards the products “where we can play and win,” Jim Hackett, Ford’s president and CEO said in a news release.
