保管中のＦＤのバッテリーが弱くなってきていた。

そのバッテリーは購入してからまだ１年半、日常的に稼働しているクルマだったなら問題なく使えているはずだけど、一時抹消中で充放電の頻度が低いから元気がなくなっていた。
家庭用の充電器で充電してみたけど電圧は復活したものの、比重は戻らなかったので、出入りの整備工場に持ち込んで相談してみることにした。

「預かって充電します」ということになり、充電完了の連絡があったのは四日後だった。

引き取りに行きながら、「だいぶ時間がかかったな、忘れてたんじゃないかな・・・」とどこか批判的な思考が浮かんでもきた。

メカニックに聞いたら、「一晩位の充電では効果が出ないことも多いですね。今回は放電レベルが深かったので、途中経過を観察しながらじっくりと充電しました。きちんとバッテリーの状態に合わせて、その許容範囲内で行えば数日の充電で復活してくることもあるんです。今回は三日かかりました。」ということでした。

自分が行ったのは１２時間程度、それで追い込んだと思い込んでいた。
結果からすれば、それじゃあ全然足りなかったのですね。

「バッテリー充電なんて、自動充電器をつないでやればそれでＯＫ」という判断。
「充電を忘れていたんじゃないか」という疑念を持ったのが恥ずかしかった。

忙しい他の作業をこなしながら、同時に私のバッテリーの変化を３日間にわたって観察してくれていたのに。素人とプロフェッショナルの違いは大きいな、つくづくそう実感した。

お陰でバッテリーは復活できた。実に有難かった。
充電が完了してすでに数日たっている。
電圧は１３Ｖ、比重はスポイトの目盛りが浮き上がり計測範囲を超えるほどに復帰している。

たかが充電、されど充電。
知識や経験の差は圧倒的だ。

少し前、久しぶりにある店に足を運んだ。

私はそういうものを見たり買ったりするのが昔から好きだった。
憧れも、悲しみも、驚きも自由に手に取ってそれを想像し、わが手中にすることがかなうからだ。

想像だけ膨らませて満足して帰ることだって多々ある。周りも見ていてそういう人も多く目につく。もちろん店員もそういう事情は知っているが、夢を商っていることを承知しているのであまり詮索はしてこない。

うさちゃんには、スチールホイールと白いホイールキャップが付いていた。
別のホイールに付け替えてからも、ホイールキャップだけ保管してあった。

ラウムに乗っている知り合いは、色あせて汚れてきたシルバーのキャップが憂鬱だった。
白いホイールキャップは重苦しさを吹き飛ばし、魔法のように気分を軽やかにした。

「頼りないケーブル、主塔だな」、訪れるたび、見るたびにそう思う。
それに支えられたやはり頼りない橋げたを歩くのが恒例となっている。

寒くはなかった、じつに気持ちがいい。
