An immensely likable car, the Toyota Celica Supra is fast and fun to drive in a way that harks back to more traditional sports cars. This is not to say that the car itself is old-fashioned, because it isn’t, but its virtues are old-fashioned. Big six-cylinder engines have always been loved for their smoothness and their unmistakable sound. Big six-cylinder engines with double overhead camshafts and electronic fuel injection bring one all that good stuff amplified to about the tenth power. Add a crisp, positive five-speed gearbox, independent rear suspension, and aggressive tires, and you’re looking at a car that could carve a niche for itself in any market in the world, even in a depression. Wrap the whole thing in distinctive bodywork, give it a state-of-the-art interior and one of the best original-equipment sound systems available, and all the odds for success are in your favor. We have recently completed a 30,000-mile test on a Supra, and it was a car that we truly hated to give up. One is reluctant to speak of “a man’s car” in these liberated times, but the Supra is exactly that. The pedal effort, the shift linkage, the steering, the throttle response, the ride motions are all masculine—not fake macho, but positive male essence.
