The New Aston Martin Vantage Is As Quick As the Civic Type R Around the Nürburgring
Aston Martin aren't renowned for blistering Nürburgring lap records, but that doesn't mean the British marque can't post respectable times. A new Vantage lapped the Nordschleife in an impressive 7:43.9, nearly matching the time set in 2017 by the purpose-built Honda Civic Type R. Not bad for an elegant grand tourer.
German publication Sport Auto conducted the test using a standard Vantage (albeit one in a lovely shade of red). The Vantage is powered by a 4.0-liter twin-turbo V-8 making 503 horsepower and 505 lb-ft of torque, sourced from Mercedes-AMG. Power is sent to the Vantage's rear wheels via an eight-speed automatic transmission (this car didn't have the optional seven-speed manual gearbox).
Despite the Vantage's heavy curb weight and leisurely on-road intentions, the grand tourer seems to be right at home at the Green Hell, handling hight speed turns and big braking zones with grace.
If we're honest, we think a modern two-seater with over 500 horsepower could go a bit quicker—but that's never been what Aston Martins are about. Outright speed isn't everything, after all. Things like on-road comfort and a spacious trunk are more important for the people who actually buy these things. 'Ring lap times are likely the last thing potential owners are thinking about. Still, it's nice to know your comfy cruiser can not only survive the Green Hell, but thrive there.
