西山三山・湖南三山・教林坊（その７・教林坊ライトアップ）

この日の最後に、教林坊のライトアップを見に訪れました。
教林坊は、推古13（605）年に聖徳太子によって創建されました。
寺名の「教林」とは太子が林の中で教えを説かれたことに由来し、境内には「太子の説法岩」と呼ばれる大きな岩と、ご本尊を祀る霊窟が残され、「石の寺」と呼ばれています。
本尊は太子自作の石仏で、子宝を授かった村娘の難産を帝王切開によって助けたという安産守護の言い伝えがあります。その時、傍らの小川が安産の血で赤く染まったことから赤川観音と呼ばれ、二度参りによる心願成就のほか、良縁成就、子授け、安産の観音さんとしても信仰されています。
江戸時代前期のヨシ葺き書院は、里坊建築の古様式を伝える貴重な建物です。
また書院西面の名勝庭園は小堀遠州作と伝えられ、枯れ滝・鶴島・亀島など巨石を用いて豪快に表現された桃山時代を象徴する池泉回遊式庭園です。書院南面にも室町時代と考えられる庭園があり、普陀落山を表現した観音浄土の庭となっています。
白洲正子は、昭和44（1969）年1月に来坊し、「芸術新潮」に連載の「かくれ里」で教林坊を紹介しました。
